Our Chart of the Week highlights a significantly improved environment for bond investors, with the real yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury approaching 3%, near its highest level since 2007.

Real yield represents the return investors can earn after accounting for inflation, making it one of the most important measures of bond market attractiveness. Today’s elevated real yields not only provide investors with greater income potential but have historically served as a strong starting point for future returns.

Looking back to the early 2000s, when real yields were 2% or higher, bonds generated average returns exceeding 6% over the following 12 months. By comparison, periods when real yields ranged between 0% and 2% produced average returns closer to 4%.

While future performance will depend on the path of interest rates, inflation, and economic growth, higher starting yields have historically improved both income generation and total return potential. With real yields near their highest levels in almost two decades, today’s bond market presents a compelling opportunity for investors seeking income, diversification, and portfolio stability.
