The chart of the week looks at which countries are mining the most Bitcoin, starting in 2019. As is very evident, China was mining the majority of Bitcoin until early 2021, largely due to their cheap access to electricity, which cryptocurrency mining requires a lot of. China started to drop mining and currently mines nothing. This is due to China’s crackdown on cryptocurrency mining, a move that sent the price of Bitcoin plummeting at the time. Bitcoin has since recovered but the issue of large amounts of electricity being needed to mine cryptocurrencies still remains an issue and has been brought up by many others as well.
