The chart of the week looks at various parts of the country of Russia and their economy. Russia on a global stage has a relatively small influence with less than 2% of the global population and global GDP. But in other areas, their influence is much larger than one would expect from population and GDP. Commodity production in areas such as precious metals, wheat and fertilizer make up about 10% of global production. Oil production is about 5x larger than their population at 11% and gas production is even higher at 17%. The one that has been discussed a lot lately is the huge ties of Russian gas to Europe, which relies on Russia for 40% of their gas consumption.
