Consumer spending rose more than expected in October. While some of that jump was due to higher prices, this week’s chart breaks it down into nominal (left and including inflation) and real (right and inflation adjusted), both of which continue at grow at a pace above pre-pandemic levels. The reading is a strong indication that the economy continues to strengthen, given that consumer spending accounts for roughly 70% of the U.S. economy.
